Mochamad Hafid Mubarak
Jakarta, Indonesia
Expert Staff in Urban Design, Ministry of National Development Planning of The Republic of Indonesia
For the past three years, Hafid has been pursuing a career as an Urban Designer in Indonesia. He started his career at PDW, a design consultancy firm based in Jakarta. Under the Urban Planning and Design division, he has worked on master planning, feasibility studies, and development guidelines in various large-scale developments, ranging from housing, to industrial areas, to tourism destination planning. After his service at PDW, he began working for the Ministry of National Development Planning Agency as an expert staff, offering his expertise in urban design and development to assist in developing the Master Plan for Samarinda City, one of the crucial stakeholders under the Tri-City metropolitan development scheme in supporting the creation of an “economic superhub” for the New Capital City of Nusantara.
Before his professional years, he studied Architecture at the renowned Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), where he developed his interest in envisioning a sustainable built environment. His unique personal background of being raised in a middle-class Indonesian household that is educated in architecture and working in the planning sector has enriched his perspective on the complexities of urban development of the global south—where balancing socioeconomic with environmental aspects is crucial for just development, shaping a sustainable pathway for urban transformation.
By joining the MRED+D program, Hafid intends to expand his capabilities in urban development from a mere design angle to also cover the financial and economic aspects of development, especially for sustainability-related projects. His area of interest includes developing creative financing and partnership schemes to fund urban redevelopment actions and green infrastructures, which he believed to be essential in driving economic growth while shaping environmentally- and socially-inclusive cities.
In his free time, he loves to walk around the city—making sense of a city by observing its cultures and urban fabrics. He also seeks pleasure in food, often frequenting unique restaurants and cafes around him.
