Faculty and academics must submit all proposals and receive all awards for extramural support through the appropriate central office, e.g., the Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) or Industry Alliances Office (IAO).
Phoebe Search is a tool that Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs use to see all the Berkeley proposals and awards under their name. PIs can also see a list of their support staff aligned with proposals and awards; this can include names, phone numbers, and emails for Research Administrators, SPO Officers, and IAO Officers. See the PI Quick Guide.
PI Portfolio is a Cal Answers tool that provides a comprehensive picture of fund balances, expenses, and budgets for faculty-managed funds and sponsored awards. The PI Portfolio dashboard provides detailed and current actual and projected balances to easily monitor your funds for projected deficits. You have automatic access to PI Portfolio with your CalNet ID and passphrase.
The Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) provides guidance/services that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship. For those working in laboratories, EH&S is a key contributor in their functioning and in training. Lines of service include: biosafety; chemical safety; controlled substances; environmental protection; equipment and tool safety; hazardous materials; laser safety; radiation safety; training; and others. EH&S also provides researchers with lab coats, safety glasses/goggles, as well as shared protective equipment to labs, e.g., face shields and protective aprons.
The Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC)is the institutional animal care and use committee at Berkeley. Its activities are mandated by the U.S. Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service Policy. The ACUC is charged with reviewing and approving all proposed uses of live vertebrate animals in teaching and research.
The Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) comprises two groups that serve as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) for Berkeley. The mission of the IRBs is to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of all human participants in research conducted by faculty, staff and students.
The Berkeley Research Development Office (BRDO) provides a range of proposal-related services aimed at increasing research funding while decreasing faculty burden in applying for it. BRDO works with faculty to identify funding opportunities, facilitate team-building, support effective proposal development, and provide proposal-related training and resources. Services are free and available to all Berkeley faculty. For additional information on research, research units, and funding opportunities, visit the Berkeley Research page.
Research IT supports faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, visiting scholars, and staff researchers across UC Berkeley. Berkeley Research Computing (BRC) offers a free “Faculty Computing Allowance” on the campus’s shared cluster, Savio, which is available to all Principal Investigators; researchers may also purchase “condominium” nodes, on which their jobs run with priority access. BRC also supports research computation in the cloud and in virtualized analytic environments, and offers grant application assistance.Research IT partners with the Library to offer Research Data Management services, providing resources for all phases of the research data lifecycle. Partnering with the Dean of Arts & Humanities, Research IT supports Berkeley’s Digital Humanities Program. Collections and digital asset management solutions for campus collections are supported by the Museum Informatics program.
ERSO is a central administrative hub providing comprehensive research and administrative services to the College of Environmental Design. Find research support information on the ERSO website.
