Bio

Dan Whelan is a Bay Area Native with a passion for all things real estate. Growing up in a real estate family, Dan was exposed to many aspects of the industry early on and has continued to expand his knowledge and experiences to get a well-rounded understanding of the industry as a whole. Dan was one of the first students to declare a Real Estate Minor while attending Santa Clara University and was an instrumental part of growing the student-run Real Estate Association to become the largest and most active student group on campus. He served as Co-President of the Real Estate Association for two years and Vice President for one year. While at Santa Clara University, Dan received a B.S. in Finance with minors in Real Estate, Economics, and Entrepreneurship.

Dan has been working as the Senior Investment Analyst in the Northmarq San Francisco office, providing creative debt and equity financing on real estate assets across North America. Over the past three years at Northmarq, Dan has analyzed over $1.5 Billion in real estate assets and, as the lead analyst, successfully financed roughly $750M in debt and equity across all asset types. Prior to Northmarq, Dan held various roles at firms such as Prometheus, Greystar, Marcus & Millichap, as well as Edgile Properties, a small property management and development firm in London. Through these roles, he has gained experience in development, financing, brokerage, construction, permitting & entitlements, property & project management, among others.

Dan’s passion for real estate extends beyond his professional life. He is deeply committed to serving his local communities, as evidenced by his support for the Housing Industry Foundation (HIF), a local real estate non-profit working to prevent homelessness in the Bay Area. Dan’s dedication was recognized when he became the youngest member to be brought on to the HIF Board of Directors in the organization’s 35+ year history. He was entrusted with the responsibility of starting and serving as the Chairman of the Building Leaders Initiative (BLI). The mission of the BLI is to grow support for HIF’s homeless prevention programs by getting emerging real estate professionals knowledgeable about and involved in HIF’s programs through educational, networking, and charitable events.

Dan is attending the UCB MRED+D program to continue his learning, with the goal of exiting the program further equipped with the skills to be a leader in the industry so he can drive innovation in the development space to create a more sustainable, equitable, and affordable built environment, locally and beyond.

Outside of real estate, Dan is an avid surfer and scuba diver and has a passion for woodworking and building things. Dan is a third-generation Cal Bear, as well as a third-generation Santa Clara Bronco.
