Since its founding in 1959, the College of Environmental Design has achieved distinction for its integration of architecture, planning, and landscape design with an emphasis on environmental and social justice within the built environment. Ranked #1 for Public University in the U.S. for Architecture and the Built Environment (2025 QS World University Rankings), CED is renowned for theory, research, innovation, and practice focused on the built environment, with particular attention to design excellence, climate solutions, and new materials and technologies. The College brings together a wide range of disciplines and boasts strong connections with professions and practitioners, positioning its undergraduates to be highly competitive candidates for master’s programs and its graduate students to be sought out by public entities and firms in the private sector.
The dean will be joining CED at an opportune time for impact—locally, nationally, and globally—as the CED community is eager for its next leader to shape a cohesive and forward-thinking vision. This vision should build upon CED’s pioneering focus on how the built environment can improve lives. The next dean will also help strengthen connections across a college of 211 renowned faculty and committed staff, an extraordinarily talented and diverse student body of just over 1,200 students, and a network of nearly 24,000 distinguished alumni dedicated to an expansive curriculum and connections across disciplines.
Building on CED’s unique identity and strengths, the next dean will be a strategic leader who excels in fostering collaborations and connections among scholars, practitioners, students, alumni, and other stakeholders to unite the various approaches to environmental design. This leader will need to navigate the complexities and opportunities of a public university, serve as a dynamic advocate for both CED and UC Berkeley, deeply value and uphold the principles of shared governance, and thoughtfully balance the College’s teaching, research, and practice priorities centered in design excellence. The next dean will have the opportunity to build on CED’s strong reputation, unique composition of programs, innovative pedagogy, and blend of research and practice, leading the College into its next era of excellence and maintaining its prominence in the Bay Area and beyond.

Salary range: The posted University of California Deans’ Salary Bands set the pay ranges for deans. The Dean of the College of Environmental Design position is in Band 2: $239,600 –$611,100. The minimum salary that UC Berkeley expects to pay for this position is $375,000.

UC Berkeley’s Department of Architecture was founded on strong principles of design, multidisciplinary collaboration and respect for experimentation. There are over 570 students, 180 of which are graduate students, over 20 full time faculty, over 30 part-time faculty, and 5 career staff.
This position supports multiple functions and independently performs a full range of responsibilities. Working independently under the leadership of the department manager and Chair, applies in-depth understanding of the profession to all aspects of curriculum management. Possesses broad job knowledge, analyzes problems, and presents solutions.

Responsibilities
40% Scheduling and Course Support: Working with a high degree of independence, in consultation with Chair / faculty / MSO, determines courses to be offered each term based upon department major requirements for degree programs, enrollment trends, course restrictions, and faculty availability. Examples include:
- Scheduling undergraduate and graduate courses for fall, spring, and summer
- Mid-review and final-review scheduling
- DSP accommodations for exams
- DeCal courses
- Making adjustments to class sizes and number of discussion sections
- Devising solutions to classroom space, scheduling problems, and change requests
- Assigning courses to faculty and graduate teaching assistants

10% Chair / MSO / Admin Support: Working with a high degree of independence, in consultation with Chair / MSO, assists in administrative support for the department, including the following:
- Coordinate meetings
- Take notes and assist during faculty meetings
- Manage calendars
- Serve as initial point of contact for visitors to the department; handle queries from faculty, staff, students, and visitors
- Answer phone and email queries
- Assist in ensuring that daily operations run smoothly
- Keep inventory and works with staff to purchase office supplies for department

Salary & Benefits
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $65,000 to $78,000 ($5,416.66 to $6,500.00 monthly). This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly.
The Assistant Director of Development + Alumni Relations leads alumni relations and annual giving initiatives for the College of Environmental Design. This position is responsible for developing CED’s donor pipeline through effective communications, cultivation, stewardship, and alumni engagement practices. The Assistant Director leads CED’s annual giving strategy, including Big Give and partnering with University Development and Alumni Relations. In addition, this staff member manages a small portfolio of leadership giving donors and CED’s giving society. This position reports to the Assistant Dean, Development and Alumni Relations.

Responsibilities
35% Fundraising: Personally manage a portfolio of leadership level prospects with a capacity of up to $100K. Identify and qualify prospective donors. Cultivate, solicit and steward gifts of $1K+. Fundraising work may include attending evening or weekend events and meetings.
30% Annual Giving: Lead all aspects of CED annual giving fundraising efforts, including developing and executing e-solicitations, serving as the CED liaison for University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) on direct mail response and telemarketing campaigns, Big Give, crowdfunding campaigns, and annual giving impact statements. Manage CED’s Wurster Society, annual giving calendar, track and report fundraising results. Serve as CED point person on the Annual Giving Roundtable working group.
15% Alumni Relations: Manage CED’s alumni programs, including Homecoming and Bauer Wurster Society events. Develop and implement programming and communications that support alumni connections to CED. Serve as CED point person on Berkeley Alumni Engagement Group.
15% Communications: Manage Give Pages on CED website, including writing content and coordinating with CED’s communications team. Donor communications efforts include writing newsletter content and custom stewardship and program impact reports.
5% Professional development: Engage in professional learning and growth opportunities, and actively contributes to a team environment that fosters and promotes a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) within the unit and at CED.

Overview
The Development Associate is a critical support role within the Development and Alumni Relations team at the College of Environmental Design. The position is integral to donor stewardship and alumni relations efforts, including external communications and events. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Development and Alumni Relations, the position is designed to provide administrative support and project management for the team.

Responsibilities
40% Oversees CED acknowledgment process and stewardship program, including serving as liaison for University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) on endowment and current-use student and faculty support reporting. Responsibilities include managing CED stewardship calendar, acknowledgment process within CED and in partnership with UDAR. Serve as CED point person for UDAR Donor Relations gatherings.
25% Manages and plans select donor events, including logistics from coordinating vendors to sending invitations, from post event thank you emails to attendance list upload to database. May provide administrative support for Homecoming and Wurster Society events.
20% Supports CED’s development and alumni relations digital presence, including management of online giving pages on give.berkeley.edu, e-communications via marketing cloud, and CED participation in campus-wide online mentorship platform.
10% Provides administrative support, including purchasing, international travel arrangements, donor meeting logistics, preparation of donor and event briefings, CADS list request pulls, and oversight of the CED D+AR email and google drive.
