CANCELLED! BERKELEY ARCHITECTURE EVENT: PUBLISHING ARCHITECTURE COLLOQUIUM

Wednesday | Apr 1, 2020
6:30pm - 9:00pm
On Campus
Building: Wurster Hall Room Number: 112
Contact: jlwang@berkeley.edu

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!

Publishing plays multiple roles in contemporary architecture. It can consolidate new movements, promote public awareness of design culture, advance research and scholarship, and support alternative modes of practice. These synergies are explored by a panel of experts assembled for 'Publishing Architecture,' a public discussion organized in conjunction with Room One Thousand, the Department of Architecture's student journal. The panel participants are:

  • Robert Gonzalez, founding editor of AULA: Architecture & Urbanism in las Americas
  • Nancy Levenson, editor and executive director of Places Journal
  • Amanda Reeser-Lawrence, editor of PRAXIS: Journal for Writing + Building
  • Avery Trufelman, producer of the podcast 99% Invisible

The 2020 issue of Room One Thousand will be unveiled at the event reception following the panel discussion.

ABOUT ROBERT GONZALEZ

Robert Alexander González, PhD, AIA, is the founding Editor of AULA: Architecture & Urbanism in Las Americas, a journal he founded in 1998 while doing doctoral work at UC Berkeley. The journal developed for over 20 years, at time in conjunction with conferences held at several universities. In the late 90s, he served as Places Assistant Editor to Donlyn Lyndon, and with Samina Quraeshi, he was Guest Editor of the first EDRA/Places Awards issue. He has also served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Architectural Education.

Robert is an architectural historian, architect and a professor of architecture. He is Director of the Texas Tech El Paso Program, located on the US-Mexico border in one of the largest bi-national metropolitan areas in the world. He recently lectured at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, DC, on an architectural competition he is organizing for a memorial that commemorates victims of racism and US aggression on the US-Mexico border. Robert is the author of Designing Pan-America: U.S. Architectural Visions for the Western Hemisphere. He has written about architectural competitions, the borderlands, Latin American/Latinx architecture, Pan-Americanism, and world’s fairs. His research has been supported by the Ford Foundation, the CCA Montreal, and the Graham Foundation.

ABOUT NANCY LEVENSON

Nancy has been a fellow at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and contributed to numerous periodicals, including Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture Magazine, the Journal of Planning Literature, the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, and Perspecta. She is an adjunct associate professor in the faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Monash University, and serves on the boards of the Architecture Lobby and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
