ARCHITECTURE LECTURE: FERNANDO MARTI + PRESCOTT REAVIS | COUNCIL OF COMMUNITY HOUSING ORGANIZATIONS + KULIMA

Wednesday | Sep 8, 2021 - Friday | Oct 29, 2021
ON DEMAND
Building: Wurster Hall
Contact: jlwang@berkeley.edu
ON DEMAND AT https://vimeo.com/454798738

TRUSTED TRANSLATORS: CO-CREATING THROUGH CULTURE, ARTS AND DESIGN JUSTICE

Prescott Reavis (Kulima) and Fernando Martí (Council of Community Housing Organizations) describe their architectural practices embedded in and accountable to communities. Their work ranges from the co-production of liberatory spaces from East Oakland to Detroit, to youth arts practices and planning demands in SF’s Mission District, that have shaped community-owned and controlled spaces and housing.

ABOUT FERNANDO MARTI

Photograph

Fernando Marti is co-director of the Council of Community Housing Organizations (CCHO), a coalition of community- and faith-based developers and housing justice advocates. CCHO’s mission is to foster the development of permanently affordable housing under community control and through non-speculative means of ownership. Prior to CCHO, Fernando was an architect at Asian Neighborhood Design, and before that, at Mission Housing Development Corporation, Urban Ecology, and Jacobson Silverstein Winslow Degenhardt Architects. He holds a joint Masters degree in Architecture and City & Regional Planning from UC Berkeley, and has taught design and development studios at UC Berkeley and the University of San Francisco. An immigrant from rural Ecuador, he grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, and has lived in San Francisco since the early 90s. Fernando is also a writer and poet, an exhibiting printmaker and altar/installation artist, and a member of the Justseeds artists collective. His community arts and architecture practice centers on envisioning a Latinx futurism grounded in ancestral traditions.
