Research Fellow Talks | Environmental Design Archives
Please join the the Environmental Design Archives (EDA) for our new round of Research Fellow Talks. Each year, the EDA offers short-term research fellowships to support scholars conducting interdisciplinary and innovative research on-site at the EDA. Our final 2024 fellow, Hannah Strothmann, will present on her research methods and preliminary findings from her time at the Environmental Design Archives.
Hannah Strothmann — Minimal Intervention
The discipline of architecture is responding to its role in exacerbating the climate crisis by seeking alternative approaches to design and construction. One relevant historical contribution in this context is the idea of “minimal intervention,” a concept co-developed but never published by Berkeley faculty member and design theorist Horst Rittel in the 1980s. Strothmann’s project aims to unearth this important contribution and to recuperate the concept for contemporary architectural discourse.
Hannah Strothmann is a doctoral candidate at Berlin University of the Arts.
