Spring 2016, Arch 202 Studio Travel — Castillo & Davids
Confronted with Dessau’s declining population (the city is located in former East Germany) and decaying, unused housing stock and industrial buildings, Bauhaus planners have devised a renewal strategy dubbed: “City Islands: Urban Cores and Landscape Zones.” Demolition provided a new landscape circuit around Dessau traversed by “the red thread”: a 2.5 meter-‐wide path marked with signage and information about the city’s heritage and structures.
The Castillo/Davids studio developed an extension and or alternative to the Bauhaus Museum currently in the planning stages in Dessau, Germany. in the form of a series of "Bauhaus" pavilions to be distributed around the red thread. A trip to Berlin and Dessau was undertaken by the studio in March of 2016 to study the site and its social historical and cultural context.
