Fall 2018, Arch 100C – Outside In Inside Out
In the course of designing a Dance School, Outside In Inside Out, during this semester, we will endeavor to train our capacity to create architectural visions and examine the various dimensions of designing from the outside in and from the inside out. We will explore both approaches to potentially realize that there is an infinite number of possibilities between these two alternatives. We will also test these two approaches against the inhabitants’ experiences and finally, we will observe how these options may guide us in seeing how we design from either or both our own mind and body.
More precisely, in terms of the creative process, we will design from the outside in (starting from the vision of a volume and developing it into plans and sections), and subsequently, we will design from the inside out (working from plans and sections and modifying the volumes accordingly). Within the above framework, this design studio will focus on exploring light, sculptural forms, envelopes, and skins, and will be grounded in the newest materials and structures we are able to find. It will address two fundamental questions: how do we get inspired to liberate our creative energy and freely explore building forms, and how do we become intimate with technology on one hand and the relation between the inhabitants’ bodily experiences and the spaces we design on the other hand.
