Fall 2018, Arch 100C – Emergence-Paradigm
Treatment I: A Manifesto for the Inferno
Researching ‘the burns’, establish a critical base for our work by gathering data, compiling information, and documenting the history and appearance of fire in cities, architecture, literature, film, & photography.
As we prepare for studio there are 27 active wildfires in California [hundreds in the world]. Each student will develop a focused topic of interest and produce a research map and a written manifesto.
Treatment II: Se7en Situations + The Body
Ideas before architecture—event before the program. The seven situations are points of contact, tacit interactions between the flesh and senses of the body and architecture. The se7en situations produce a series of scaled constructs, a body booklet & a proportional system.
Treatment III: Blackened Ground
Vision + Site + Sight = a landform, an earthwork. The studio will study 3 sites, a circle in Napa, a triangle in Sonoma, and a rectangle in Santa Rosa. The fabrication of ‘surface’ models as new ground conditions or landscape as a water collection ‘device’ is the idea. The studio will utilize the DFL ZUND to make multiple versions of folded paper model landscapes horizontal lines that collect water, grow food, and hold architecture.
