ARCH 100D, Spring 2019 – Material Matters
About the Material Matters Studio
Each material has a shape and set of unique properties. These shapes and properties influence one another as parts are joined. The assembly of parts to a whole influence the formal qualities of a building. The Material Matters studio shall be viewed as a platform for contemplating the role of the architect as “to (re)construct an object in such a way as to manifest thereby the rules of functioning of this object” (The Structuralist Activity, Roland Barthes). As one of the projects in this studio, professor David Jaehning prompted students to create designs for a resilient recreation center.
