BIOGRAPHY

Jan Smidek is a Partner at JMA Ventures, a San Francisco-based commercial real estate investment and development firm with more than $3.5 billion of projects over its history spanning hospitality, leisure, residential, and mixed-use assets. Since joining the firm in 2009, he has played a central role in sourcing, executing, and managing investments across the full lifecycle of complex operating assets, with a particular focus on hospitality, leisure, and resort-oriented properties.

He serves on the Investment Committee for both JMA Ventures and the JMA Stratum Fund I, JMA Ventures’ first commingled investment vehicle, which he helped raise and continues to oversee as portfolio manager. His transaction experience exceeds $750 million and includes acquisitions, development, and asset management across multiple asset classes. Smidek has led or supported several of the firm’s notable investments and developments, including the acquisition and oversight of JMA’s Lake Tahoe hotel and resort portfolio, the acquisition of a Sacramento office portfolio, the entitlements and predevelopment of the Hearst Hotel and Hearst Garage in San Francisco, and the development of a grocery-anchored mixed-use project in Truckee.

Before joining JMA Ventures, Smidek worked at Analysis Group, where he managed economic analyses and valuations in support of complex business litigation.

An active industry leader, Smidek is a past President of the Berkeley Real Estate Alumni Association (BREAA) and has also served in a leadership role within the Urban Land Institute (ULI) on its Recreational Development Council. He has lectured on real estate development and real estate capital markets at University of California, Berkeley.
