SPECIALIZATIONS

Building Science, Climatology, Human Comfort, Thermodynamics, and Architectural History.

EDUCATION
Ph.D. Architectural Science, University of Edinburgh
Master of Urban Studies, Yale University
Master of Forestry, Yale University
B.A., Yale University
PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

Architecture (both the profession and the buildings it produces) benefits when architects guide the technical and social aspects of their work from a scientifically-informed position. Only architects are in the position to initiate the integration of technical considerations into their work, to where their buildings reduce or replace some of the roles now performed (often inappropriately) by mechanical equipment. Such integration is unfortunately not common in practice today, and is not easy to attain, but it is clearly one of the leading challenges that our profession will be facing in the future.

BIOGRAPHY

Professor Arens is an Emeritus Professor in Architeture and former Director of the Center for Environmental Design Research (CEDR.) He is currently the Director of the Center for the Built Environment, a National Science Foundation-sponsored industry/university cooperative research consortium centered at UC Berkeley.

Professor Arens has produced an extensive number of publications in research journals such as ASHRAE's Transactions and Energy and Buildings on topics addressing thermal comfort, urban form and climate, prediction methods and design tools for natural ventilation, energy-efficiency, and the performance of task-conditioning systems.

Some of his honors include three Progressive Architecture Research Awards and three ASHRAE Best Technical Paper Awards.

His areas of research activity include thermal comfort, buildings and climate and building energy conservation.
