John Hudson Thomas (1878-1945)

John Hudson Thomas (1878-1945) was born in Ward, Nevada and moved to northern California as a young child. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1902 and continued his professional education attending graduate school in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1904. From 1904 to 1906, he worked for the architect John Galen Howard. The following year he formed a partnership with architect George Plowman and together they completed 50 residential projects in the Arts & Craft style. In 1910, Thomas established an independent practice. His more well-known projects include: the Hume Cluster in Buena Vista Hills, the Capitan Maury residence, and the Spring Mansion in Berkeley.

The John Hudson Thomas records (1913 to 1940) are composed primarily of architectural drawings of residences and some commercial buildings in the San Francisco Bay area (Berkeley, Piedmont, Richmond, and Oakland). Also included are photographs of the Boise and Kelly residences.
