Arne and Lois Kartwold (1916-)

The small Arne and Lois Kartwold collection consists of a photo album containing images of student life from the “Ark,” UC Berkeley’s architecture school, and drawings created by Arne.

Lois (Goetz) Kartwold (center) earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley (1939), receiving AIA awards for her student work. She continued her studies at M.I.T. in 1940. Her first job upon returning to San Francisco from the east was in Richard Neutra’s office, working for Otto Winkler. In 1941, she worked in Clarence Tantau’s office and in 1942, she went to work for her UC classmate Don Hardison at the Kaiser shipyards in Richmond, California. Lois met her future husband, Arne Kartwold (second row, center), through a mutual friend and colleague working in William Wurster’s office where Arne also was employed. Arne had also attended UC Berkeley and received further education at Harvard. He worked in the Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons (WBE) office from 1944-1946. In the mid-1960s, the Kartwold’s worked together on a development project in Alamo.
