CED Stands in Solidarity with the Asian and Asian American Community

Mar 17, 2021

Recently across the Bay Area and the Nation, we have witnessed violent attacks and hate-crimes against the Asian and Asian American community, most recently on Tuesday night with the tragic murders of Asians and non-Asians in Atlanta, Ga. While the Atlanta terror is still being investigated, we know that the majority of these violent attacks are not random or new and have been fueled by white supremacy, racism, and xenophobia.

At CED our commitment to anti-racism, however imperfect, remains central to everything that we do as an ongoing reckoning. We are committed to dismantling systems of racism, white supremacy, anti-blackness, and colonialism in our college and in the world through the work that we do and the values we collectively espouse. Today we ask that all of us come together to fight against this violence — to provide support and care to one another during this frightening time — and in that solidarity, we can uphold our principles of community as we stand together against systemic racism.

To our community members who are mourning these senseless acts of violence, we support you and encourage you to take care of yourselves and to reach out for help if you need support.

Sincerely,

Vishaan Chakrabarti, William W. Wurster Dean
Renee Y. Chow, Executive Dean and Chair of Architecture
College of Environmental Design

Here a few helpful resources recently shared in Chancellor Carol Christ’s statement to the UC Berkeley community:

For students, find where to get support and make a report

Asian Pacific American Student Development (APASD) offers advising and programming for Asian American, Pacific Islander, South Asian, Southwest Asian and North African (AA/PI/SSWANA) communities.

CAPS for API Students is a resource listing counselors who specialize in working with AAPI students.

Employee Assistance is available to any staff member who would like to talk to a counselor.

Stop AAPI Hate tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders nationwide.
