Fall 2018, Arch 203 – Zero-Net-Energy Recreation Center

This studio is based on the program and site for the 2018 Architecture at Zero Competition, sponsored by the California Council AIA and PG&E.

The CSU Monterey Bay Campus was founded in 1994 on the former site of Fort Ord, a decommissioned Army base established in 1917. It is located one mile east of the Monterey Bay shoreline and dunes, north of the town of Monterey. The campus is planning for new facilities for the Kinesiology Department and Recreation. They are also looking for ways to address the California Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan that requires all new commercial construction to be ZNE by 2030 and the campus goal of zero-carbon by 2030.

Two buildings are planned. Each building is approximately 33,000sf - 36,000 sf and they each house program areas for both the Kinesiology Department and Recreation. These programs include faculty offices, classrooms, research labs, gymnasium, dance studios, weight and cardio rooms, and locker rooms.
