Fall 2018, Arch 201 – Inconvenience of Convenience

A total of 2 million square feet of commercial space was approved this summer by the SF Board of Supervisors for the revised design of the SF Shipyard and Candlestick Point communities. Hailed as inclusive for working family and seniors, encompassing educational institutions, artist lofts, maker spaces, office, and retail, the redevelopment masterplan of Hunter’s Point/Candlestick Point (FivePoint and Adaye Associates) aims to address a wide range of critical urban needs. Specifically, the masterplan focuses on the SF affordable housing crisis seeking to establish a work-living hub with SF Shipyard’s SM as the future Urban Innovation District. However, the masterplan for Hunter’s Point Shipyard differs significantly from the proposed redevelopment of Candlestick Point –a cluster of multistory towers with mixed-use (office/commercial) and a mall. Candlestick Point is projected as the convenience hub where the bulk of the Shipyard commerce is to be situated.
