Spring 2018, ARCH 100D – Constructed Landscapes
Although vital to the needs of growing cities, the extraction of building materials through quarries is widely regarded as environmental destruction and hazardous to human life. The San Rafael Rock Quarry has been in operation since the 1870s. After its resources are finally depleted in the next decade, it will be rezoned for high-end residential and commercial development. However, a private philanthropic foundation is proposing to purchase the site for an Artists in Residence (AIR) program.
