William Turnbull (1935-1997)

William Turnbull was born in New York in 1935 and raised on his architect father’s farm in Far Hills, New Jersey. Turnbull is best known for his Sea Ranch, Sonoma County, California projects including the condominium, athletic club, workers housing and individual residences, on which he collaborated with Charles Moore and several other well-known architects. Four of the partners who created Sea Ranch joined as the firm of Moore Lyndon Turnbull Whitaker (MLTW). Turnbull set up his own office in 1970.

The William Turnbull/MLTW collection consists of extensive project files, photographs, marketing files, and professional papers. In addition to Sea Ranch structures, Turnbull designed award-winning projects such as Kresge College at the University of California, Santa Cruz, the Warren Zimmerman house in Virginia, and the Foothill Student Housing at the University of California, Berkeley.
