Alex Howard
Mill Valley, CA, USA
Foreman, Redhorse Constructors
Alex joins Berkeley’s Master of Real Estate Development + Design program after six years of working in the field for a general contractor specializing in high-end residential projects in San Francisco. In leadership roles, Alex has built environmentally resilient projects while consistently focusing on how to best articulate the end goal of a project’s architectural vision.
Building in San Francisco often entails reusing existing structures and materials. Alex has become an expert in preserving buildings to retrofit them with modern utilities—minimizing waste and extending the building’s lifespan. Working in the field has given him a unique relationship to the built environment: He views himself as an advocate for utilization of structural preservation strategies to salvage existing buildings and sustain the character of cities. Prior to building residences in San Francisco, Alex received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
With in-depth knowledge of building systems and a design background, Alex hopes to use the MRED+D program to further understand architectural practices and expand the perimeters of what is possible in the realm of resilient development. Alex is also a lifelong skier, mountain bike racer and carpenter.
