Spring 2019, Arch 100D – Material Matters
Each material has a shape and set of unique properties. These shapes and properties influence one another as parts are joined. The assembly of parts to a whole influence the formal qualities of a building. Material matters as it makes possible the realization of a project by creating a coherence or sensemaking regarding its built reality. This studio shall be viewed as a platform for contemplating the role of the architect as “to (re)construct an object in such a way as to manifest thereby the rules of functioning of this object” (The Structuralist Activity, Roland Barthes).
This studio will be divided into three parts. In the first part, students will begin by studying the raw materials of concrete as matter: cement, water, mineral aggregates, and admixtures. Each material has ways in which it wants to be handled or manipulated. Through research, drawing, and writing, they will become familiar with and understand the matters revolving around each material.
