Mauricio Rocha (1965) founded Taller de Arquitectura in 1991, and he later partnered with Gabriela Carrillo in Taller | Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo in 2012. He is a Graduate of the Faculty of Architecture UNAM Max Cetto workshop, Member of the National Academy of Architecture, Member of the National Art Academy and Life Jury of the Marcelo Zambrano Scholarship.

Throughout his career, he has received major awards, individually and with the firm, such as gold and silver medals in different National and International Architectural Biennales such as the Latin American and Pan American ones. In 2013, the Faculty of Architecture of the UNAM gave him the Federico Mariscal Chair, the highest recognition of this house of studies for professional practice. He also received the Emerging Voices recognition granted by the Architectural League of New York to 8 American architectural firms. Last year, the Academy of Architecture of France awarded him the Médaille d´Or Palmarés 2019 for his career path.

Mauricio has been an invited speaker in different cities across Latin America, North America, Europe, and Asia. His projects have been part of numerous exhibitions and architectural Biennales both national and international; some of his projects are part of the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France.

ABOUT TALLER | MAURICIO ROCHA + GABRIELA CARRILLO

TALLER works with the aim to develop contemporary architecture, sensitive to the context and to the environment, combining an adequate selection of local materials with state-of-the-art technology available. The dignity and quality of the spaces is constant in all their projects, always looking for the perfect balance of budget, context, typology, and of course, the user. TALLER develops public and private projects, as well as museography, temporal architecture and art interventions. Its work is deeply committed to the academy, from teaching to workshops for undergraduates and specialization courses.

Among their most representative projects are: School of Plastic Arts and San Pablo Academic and Cultural Center in Oaxaca, San Pablo Market and Public Buildings in Milpa Alta, Center for the blind and visually impaired in Iztapalapa, Library for blind and visually impaired people in Ciudadela, Criminal Courts for oral trials in Pátzcuaro-Michoacán, the Deans Building School of Commercial Banking and Cuatro Caminos Photo Museum in Mexico City, and the Community Development Center Los Chocolates in Morelos. In 2016, they worked for the exhibition "The Great Animal Orchestra" at the Cartier Foundation in Paris and the Pavilion for Hermès at the furniture fair in Milan.

THIS LECTURE IS CO-SPONSORED BY AIA EAST BAY, AND IT IS PART OF THE SPRING 2020 BERKELEY ARCHITECTURE LECTURE SERIES. OPEN TO ALL!
