Ph: WRNS Studio
San Francisco-based WRNS Studio was named the number one architecture firm in the U.S. in Architect Magazine's 2013 ARCHITECT 50, earning the top spot through the firm's breadth and execution of projects, combined with its strong commitment to sustainability and design excellence.
Firms were ranked in the categories of business, sustainability and design excellence, and were measured by additional criteria including net revenue per employee, profits invested in research and energy-efficiency metrics. For the first time the list's history, a panel of judges reviewed design portfolios showcasing each firm's work, which counted towards 60 percent of each firm's design excellence score. Design judges praised WRNS Studio's design approach for the way “each project, particularly through its materiality and form, captures and addresses the specific environment and program, resulting in a delightfully variegated portfolio.”
The 60-person firm was established by architects Jeff Warner (B.A. Architecture '74), John Ruffo (M.Arch. '82), Sam Nunes and Bryan Shiles, and has offices in Honolulu and San Francisco. A broad client base includes UC Berkeley, UCSF, the National Park Service, The Trust for Public Land, San Francisco State University and the US Forest Service. WRNS has been responsible for the design of a new office campus for Adobe Systems in Utah, The Jill and John Freidenrich Center for Translational Research at Stanford University School of Medicine, Tahoe City Transit Center, UCSF Mission Bay Medical Center Parking Structure and Sacred Heart Lower and Middle Schools, among other projects.
WRNS will be participating in Public Architecture's 1% program and the AIA's 2030 challenge, and was recently honored by the AIA with the COTE Top Ten Green Projects Award, Small Project Award, two SF Design Citation awards and the AIA California Council Merit Award.
