UC Berkeley was ranked second in the United States and fifth in the world for the subject area of architecture/built environment by global higher education analysis firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) for 2018.
QS’s 2018 rankings of the top 200 universities evaluates programs according to academic reputation and research impact. With 42 different countries represented in this year’s top 200, UC Berkeley is one of three universities representing the United States that landed in the top 10 alongside the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.
UC Berkeley's architecture program offers world-class, award-winning faculty with both broad and deep intellectual diversity. Our undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as our faculty’s research endeavors, cover fields of design and design theory, history of architecture and urbanism, building science and sustainability, structures and construction, social and cultural processes, environmental design in developing countries, digital design and virtual environments, urban design, and visual studies. Rather than embrace architecture as a single concept, we welcome and value distinct views that broaden each of our own horizons through respectful debate. We are interested in the entire life cycle of the building process, from conceptualization, through design and representation, craft and construction, and the performance of both constructed and virtual environments.
