Dear CED Community,
As many of you already know, the US Department of Homeland Security issued a disturbing new regulation (SEVP exemptions) on Monday in relation to international students and fall instruction requirements. The new guidance requires that international students on F-1 visas and in the United States cannot take a full load of on-line courses this fall and maintain their visas. They may face proceedings forcing them to leave the country.
This is deeply concerning -- adding yet another layer of challenges to our value of creating a place of belonging. While the campus participates in legal options -- and there are already several known lawsuits against ICE and the US Department of Homeland Security -- CED will also plan to provide in-person instruction that satisfies these regulations, should they be needed. As the regulations are not clear, we are working with Berkeley International Office and campus for potential solutions that will meet pedagogical, health, and community values.
In this time of growing anxiety and uncertainty, on behalf of CED, we want to let our international students and scholars know that you are valued members of our community.
To all, please take care of yourselves and those around you.
Renee and Vishaan
Outgoing and Incoming Dean of CED
