The Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Award (COSA) will be presented to thirteen individual and UC Berkeley staff members and the members of four staff teams. On Thursday, May 1, Chancellor Nicholas Dirks will be present to congratulate each recipient, along with Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Claude Steele, Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance John Wilton, and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Jeannine Raymond.
The Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Award is one of the highest honors bestowed upon campus staff and recognizes individual staff and teams who, in addition to performing all their regular job duties with excellence, demonstrate exceptional initiative in contributing to the UC Berkeley community.
CED’s fabrication shop manager, Semar Prom, is one of the recipients of the award. As the College of Environmental Design’s Fabrication Shop Manager, Semar Prom personifies Berkeley’s Operating Principles. He is flexible, imaginative, innovative, responsive, service-oriented, and accountable.
By actively promoting faculty and staff engagement in Fabrication Shop activities and priorities, Semar expanded the ways in which the shop could enhance learning, research, and public service. Semar has fostered connections between staff, faculty, students, campus, and the surrounding community. His community building has created a positive and productive work environment focused on safety, service, and accountability.
Semar diversified the pool of mechanicians and carpenters to better serve students by representing various building trades, differing levels of expertise and different backgrounds. The staff created workshops to teach specific artisanal and craft skills to CED students, as well as members of the Berkeley campus and Bay Area “maker” community.
He has been involved in initiating a CED Materials Store (to be built over Summer 2014) to provide sustainable, low cost, and easy-to-purchase wood, paper, plastic, and metal materials for student use in the Shop and Digital Fabrication Lab
