This Thursday, April 22, 7pm tune in to PBS to watch a special program featuring Charisma Acey, Professor of the Department of City and Regional Planning and Faculty Director at the Berkeley Food Institute. The program will be revisiting the 10 years since the release of the Occupy the Farm documentary, which featured community activists who occupied the UC Gill Tract to prevent a proposed supermarket development. Ten years later, the campus is building a new, large student housing complex near the farm, which will have impacts on endangered species and reduces land for farming, and may facilitate future development of the farm.
To mark Earth Day A roundtable discussion will give an update on the status of the UC Gill Tract. The roundtable features the filmmaker Todd Darling, “Occupy The Farm” organizers Effie Rawlings and Ashoka Finley; Will Smith of Black Earth Farmers; and Charisma Acey who does research on urban agriculture in her role as Faculty Director of the Berkeley Food Institute.
