Interest in sustainable architecture has been, well, sustained. However, the ‘how’ of ushering in buildings of net-zero energy consumption is still in its infancy. In response, experts from various disciplines are coming together at a new interdisciplinary frontier. The goal is to develop a closed-loop system of energy generation and regeneration using new thinking, new materials, and new partnerships. Their focus is on ‘synergistic optimization’: the convergence of sustainable technologies to increase the efficiency of building designs. In this Science podcast, Associate Professor of Architecture Maria-Paz Gutierrez talks about the convergence of various disciplines and design scales to advance sustainable architecture.
