San Francisco Chronicle's John King begins a weekly series that retraces the San Francisco landscape one hill at a time. He examines what the hills reveal about the city and its inhabitants. According to King, each hill "conveys the distance that San Francisco and the Bay Area have traveled in the past 55 years--and the underlying character of place that is stronger than politics or demographics, cultural trends or architectural fads." With each hill telling a different story, follow King's series starting with Excelsior Heights.
