Planetizen has released its list of the top 25 graduate programs in urban planning as part of the 6th Edition of the Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs, and the Department of City & Regional Planning at the College of Environmental Design was ranked as the best public graduate program and second-best graduate program in the country.
Planetizen's ranking system is based on a combination of statistical data collected from the programs themselves and opinion data gathered from planning educators. Planetizen sent surveys to 97 schools with master's programs in planning, requesting data on such measures as incoming student GPA, faculty publications, and financial aid. Planetizen also attempted to survey the entire population of planning faculty, collecting contact information via publicly available information on the ACSP website and school websites. While Planetizen also surveyed current and recently graduated planning students about their opinion of their graduate planning program, these results were not included in the rankings; they were only used to determine which factors were most important to students in choosing a program.
The Guide also includes an expanded list of additional rankings to highlight the many diverse criteria students can consider beyond the "Top 25" list when choosing a program. Additional rankings include categories that highlight the size and characteristics of the city and region of the program’s location, program size, programs offering part-time study and online courses, diversity of the students attending the program, and many more.
