The California Energy Commission recently awarded a $600,000 grant to the Center for the Built Environment (CBE). The Commissions PIER Buildings Proogram grant will support two key areas of research: Advanced Personal Environmental Control Systems (APECS), led by Professor Emeritus Edward Arens and Research Specialist Hui Zhang; and space condition in near zero-net-energy (ZNE) buildings, led by Research Specialist Fred Bauman and Assistant Professor of Architecture Stefano Schiavon.
The APECS Project examines the energy-saving potential of personal comfort systems (PCS) in the workplace environment. The second project seeks to provide the professional design community with better information and tools for designing and operating near ZNE buildings using radiant heating and cooling systems. More information about both projects can be found at the Center for the Built Environment website.
