Charming Weekend Cottage Renovation in Marin

Loretta Gargan (M.L.A. '93), landscape designer and Principal of Loretta Gargan Landscape + Design, transformed her home's diminutive plot into a space-efficient haven featured in Dwell Magazine. Using her experience working within the space constraints of urban gardens, Loretta embarked on an ambitious plan to maximize the space of her own sloped yard, one of the smallest lots in Ross, CA.
"The whole property was on this gentle slope, which meant you couldn’t put a chair down without tipping over," said Loretta.
The redesigned property is complete with a dining deck for dinner parties, multiple patios, a lush green roof above a detached garage, and a lap pool and spa framed with concrete and wood.
"It's not about the space; it's about envisioning what you can do with what you have," said Loretta.
Her finished retreat is fully integrated with the natural environment, featuring "idiosyncratic plants"—a hundred-year-old olive tree and grand oaks—that lend character to the landscape.
Loretta has been awarded a Creative Work Fund Grant that involved working with middle school students to design and build a schoolyard garden. Her San Francisco-based firm Loretta Gargan Landscape + Design concentrates on residential design, drawing on inspiration from Japanese and California modernism for a minimalist design style incorporating built and natural elements.
