Transit is vital to the sustainability of cities--environmentally, economically, socially. Trains and buses are the most resourceful way of moving large numbers of people about the city. They use less space and energy and, when powered by clean fuels, emit fewer pollutants than any mode. They are also inclusive, allowing everyone--regardless of age, income or background--to access all a city has to offer.
Fifty years of Public Life research leading gradually to implementation of people-oriented planning strategies in cities across the world: Copenhagen, Melbourne, London, New York and Moscow, among others. The Livable cities of the 21st Century are characterized by a strong focus on sustainable modes of transport supported by a good public realm. Care for people and the public realm are seen as an important key for creating lively, safe, sustainable and healthy
cities.
