Reconditioned: Innovative Approaches to Façade to Environmental Design
This shared presentation will focus on the new Uber Headquarters, which redefines the public façade with an integrated atrium, enabling Uber to operate in a transparent and open fashion, while providing a distinctive architectural and design element to San Francisco’s dynamic and rapidly changing Mission Bay neighborhood. The team took a unique approach for the fully glazed, transparent atrium that is the main artery of the headquarters ,connecting spaces at all levels in both buildings. To avoid the enormous energy requirements that such an enclosed space might require, the project adopted an innovative approach that challenges traditional thermal, visual comfort and operational criteria for indoor spaces and shifts emphasis on occupants first. Rather than making the “spaces” comfortable, the solutions are designed to make “occupants” comfortable, requiring an understanding of the finer details of human sensation and perception. The presentation will cover the architectural design concept, and the evolution of the sustainability strategies, tools and analyses. By providing an overview of the design-build process, it will also demonstrate how close collaboration of the design disciplines is needed to translate sustainability strategies into reality.
