Democratic by Design: alternative institutions and a theory of urban change
From the New England Town Meeting to the community land trust, social movements throughout American history have relied on the strategy of creating alternative institutions — living models that demonstrate better ways of organizing society. Drawing from his new book, Democratic by Design (St. Martin’s Press, 2015), Gabriel Metcalf will be talking about the history, theory, and practice of institution-building as a social change strategy, with a specific focus on cities as laboratories for change.
Gabriel Metcalf is a DCRP alum and President of SPUR, a nonprofit membership organization that promotes good planning and good government through research, education and advocacy. He has written extensively in the areas of regional planning, transportation, housing, economic development, and democratic theory.
