Join us in the Wurster Courtyard for the 2015 Berkeley Circus closing party sponsored by the Siam Research & innovation Co, Ltd. (SCG). The Berkeley Circus party will be a chance for students, faculty, and alumni to mingle over gourmet food by Karen Bevels Catering, wine, and upbeat music from DJ Or Tregger of MoreSF, celebrating the talent and achievements of the College of Environmental Design community.
The highlight of the evening will be the chance to experience Bloom, the first and largest architectural-scale 3D printed cement structure. Bloom is the research project of Ronald Rael, Associate Professor of Architecture.
Bloom is a free standing pavillion composed of 840 mass customized blocks, 3D printed using an iron oxide-free Portland cement polymer formulation developed by Professor Rael, with funding and collaborative support from the Siam Research and Innovation Co.,Ltd.(SRI), the R&D division of Siam Cement Group (SCG) — the largest cement company in Thailand. The Bloom architecture is ground-breaking because it is the largest and most precise 3D printed cement polymer structure built to date that overcomes many of the previous limitations to 3D printed architecture — namely speed, cost, aesthetics, and practical applications.
