With a background in political science, city planning, and landscape architecture, Paul has a commitment to vital public spaces and quality design, and developing places with a vision beyond program. He draws inspiration from people and cultural history, and the idea that a landscape can tell a story and be designed to reflect, highlight, or challenge what it represents to others. Parallel with his understanding of design as a field of change is his understanding of environmental justice and community development, which he attributes to his political science degree and working on Capitol Hill.
