Willie Mort received a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy & Economics with a minor in Consumer Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016. After graduation, Willie worked for a hospitality development firm in Los Angeles called Pouring With Heart Hospitality (fka 213 Hospitality). At PWH Hospitality, Willie assisted in the day to day operations of 26 venues throughout Los Angeles, San Diego, Austin and Denver. Additionally, Willie worked on the development of a handful of newly-constructed hospitality concepts, from site selection to permitting to the build-out of the venues.
At PWH Hospitality, Willie witnessed how the decisions of developers and business owners affect the communities they inhabit and the urban landscape more broadly. In particular, he gained an appreciation for Pouring with Heart’s relationship with Downtown Los Angeles and the role the group’s various establishments played in the revitalization of the neighborhood. This work stoked Willie’s interest in urban development and design, specifically hospitality development.
After making the decision to leave PWH Hospitality in 2019 and pursue a graduate degree in Real Estate Development, Willie followed another one of his passions - wine - and worked at a winery in Napa Valley called Outpost Wines while studying and preparing for graduate school. During this experience, Willie learned a great deal about the wine industry and developed an even greater appreciation for those that dedicate themselves to the craft of winemaking.
At Berkeley, Willie looks forward to diving further into urban development, the relationship between urban growth and the hospitality industry, and how hospitality developers can play a part in making cities better places to live.
Outside of his academic and career pursuits, Willie is passionate about the music and culture of the 1960’s and 70’s, movies, cooking, cycling and the outdoors.
