Coming back to UC Berkeley after 20 years, Romi is excited to pursue his Master of Real Estate Development + Design degree.
Romi grew up in San Jose, CA and graduated from Cal (’00), where he majored in Political Science and Economics in his undergraduate studies. As a recipient of the John Gardner Fellowship, Romi left for Washington D.C. to start a career in public service with a focus on microfinance.
His 18-year international development and finance career spans 25 countries across Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Romi has extensive experience in small business development, impact investing and development finance.
One of his proudest achievements was during his six-year tenure at a finance startup, where he created the transnational mortgage loan product that enabled Central American immigrants to build a credit history in the U.S., leveraging it and their hard-earned money to obtain financing to build a home in their country of origin.
Romi is a champion for economic empowerment and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset. Romi envisions the MRED+D program as the next chapter in his career, combining his interests in real estate development, affordable housing and urban landscapes.
Romi has a Master of International Affairs degree with a concentration in International Finance and Business from Columbia University (’04) and is a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship for Social Innovation. Romi taught at The George Washington University School of Business as an Adjunct Lecturer for eight years.
